Gilgit-Baltistan
Phander & Ghizer
Turquoise river bends and golden poplar in autumn.
When to go
May to early November (peak: October)
Few travellers continue west of Gilgit, which is exactly why we go. Ghizer is gentler than Hunza, wider valleys, slower rivers, and in October a corridor of yellow poplar that runs for sixty kilometres.
Phander itself sits above a fork in the river, with trout, a small guesthouse on a rise, and a backdrop of unnamed 6,000-metre peaks.
