Khunjerab & the KKH
The highest paved border crossing in the world.
When to go
May to October (pass open)
The KKH is an engineering folly and a masterpiece, twenty years and a thousand lives to cut a road through the seam of the Indian and Eurasian plates. We drive it in unhurried stages, with stops at Passu's cathedral spires, the suspended bridges of Hussaini, and the cold-water springs of Sost.
The reward is the run up to Khunjerab itself: yaks, marmots, and a single red-and-yellow gate at the top of the world.
